Poomses or “forms” — the series of blocks, punches, kicks and stances, and offense and defensive movements practiced by students from white belts and beyond — are integral to taekwondo martial arts training.
Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academny students practice their poomsaes 2 to 3 times a week during class.
Students also practice at home using the video tutorials from the MTA website’s Resource page, especially for upcoming promotion test.
Note: Video Tutorials for Poomse 1 through 8 are available on the Resource page.
And now, students can show off their poomse skills and all the work put towards their poomse training at Monterey Bay Taekwondo’s first ever Poomse Competition!
The competition is scheduled at 5:00 PM on Thursday, October 30th.
All students — all age and all belt levels — are encouraged to join the competition!
Have you signed up yet?
The deadline to sign up is October 14th, and fast approaching…
Sign-up forms for this first ever competition is at the studio — or see Mr. Cabalza, Master Lee or Master Kim if you have any questions.
It will be an exciting night, with trophies awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
So, keep on practicing your poomses and get ready for a great evening of competitive fun with your fellow students on October 30th!
Who knows…the competition may inspire students to compete at Bay Area Taekwondo poomse competitions, or at the 2015 California State and at the USA Taekwondo National Championships next year!
Photos below of national teams practicing their forms are from the 2014 USA Taekwondo Nationals held at the San Jose Convention Center.
Team MTA will be fundraising during the Poomse Competition, and planning a delicious menu for the event. Our next post will have more details, so be sure to check back soon!

Just in case you thought taekwondo is only for young people — or think you are too old to take taekwondo, karate or another form of martial arts — check out this news footage and report about Clifton White of North Carolina, who received his black belt in May 2014, just a few days before he turned 80.
Note: Clip is from a Fox news affiliate in North Carolina and there may be a short ad before the start of the video.

Seeing a 74-year-old man take on martial arts was a surprise to many at the time.
“A lot of people say, even moms, 30 and 40 years old, they say ‘well I’m too old to start,’ so yes, we were very shocked,” Instructor Master Mark Wright said.
White has accomplished a number of goals later in life. He received his master’s degree in philosophy at 70. He’s currently working on his doctorate and, just a few weeks ago, he earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
“In terms of me feeling good, I feel better than I did when I was 18,” White said.
White says Tae Kwon Do not only helps him with his physical and mental strength, it helps build his character as well. Continue reading…
