Black Belt Test Saturday, October 18th from 12PM to 6PM

Monterey-Bay-Taekwondo-Academy-BeltsIt takes a lot of training to become a martial arts black belt, and today, October 18th, students of Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy who have worked through all their lower belt level curriculum will take their most challenging test yet —- a test to earn their black belt!

The testing starts at 12:00PM and concludes around 6:00 PM.

And yes — between test questions, 8 lower belt poomses, plus the standing, ground, chair self-defense and sparring techniques to demonstrate, as well as board or concrete block breaking, and other required fitness tests from Master Lee — it really takes that long to test for and to earn a black belt.

Master Lee invites the Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy family to support students and classmates as they test for black belts or for their next degree / dan level black belt.

This is a great opportunity to see what it takes to get a black belt!

Please note that the regular, month of October Promotion Test is next Saturday,  October 25th from 11:30AM  to 2:00PM (and Stripe Test this month is Thursday, October 23rd).

North Carolina man receives his black belt just a few days shy of turning 80 years old

Just in case you thought taekwondo is only for young people — or think you are too old to take taekwondo, karate or another form of martial arts — check out this news footage and report about Clifton White of North Carolina, who received his black belt in May 2014, just a few days before he turned 80.

Note:   Clip is from a Fox news affiliate in North Carolina and there may be a short ad before the start of the video.

Report Excerpt:

HIGH POINT, N.C. — At 79, Clifton White Jr. of High Point is breaking boards and barriers in his Tae Kwon Do class.

For the past five years, he has been studying Tae Kwon Do at Tiger Kim’s Tae Kwon Do studio in High Point.

Seeing a 74-year-old man take on martial arts was a surprise to many at the time.

“A lot of people say, even moms, 30 and 40 years old, they say ‘well I’m too old to start,’ so yes, we were very shocked,” Instructor Master Mark Wright said.

White has accomplished a number of goals later in life. He received his master’s degree in philosophy at 70. He’s currently working on his doctorate and, just a few weeks ago, he earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

“In terms of me feeling good, I feel better than I did when I was 18,” White said.

White says Tae Kwon Do not only helps him with his physical and mental strength, it helps build his character as well.  Continue reading…

Students under 18 years old and participating in the parade should have already filled out and submitted the Agreement to Participate form, available at the office.

There is also a sign up sheet for adults joining the parade.  Please see Master Lee or Mr. Ricky Cabalza at the office if you have any questions about these forms and the parade.

Car wash fundraiser cancelled next Saturday

Over the last few years, our car washes have raised much-needed funds for Team MTA needs. However, due to ongoing drought and water conservation concerns, our car wash fundraiser (scheduled next Saturday, August 16th)  is cancelled this year.

If you bought a car wash ticket, please see your Team MTA member or the office for a refund, or as some have done, consider the ticket a donation towards this year’s fundraising efforts.  Thank you!

This TEAM knows how to CHEER! Team MTA video clip & sound bite at the 2014 Bay Area Open

Master Lee often speaks to Team MTA members about the importance of supporting each other during rigorous competition training classes, and especially cheering on team mates during martial arts tournaments.

If you have ever wondered how a group of Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s students, parents and supporters can sound at competition events, watch and listen to this video from the 2014 Bay Area Open as the team congregated to watch the last match of the day (Team MTA member Angel Cruz in red chest gear coached by Master Kim).  Angel was again competing against a considerably taller opponent.

At the end of the challenging match and after Angel wins to place 1st, students enthusiastically cheer “…MTA, MTA, MTA, MTA!”

The 2014 Bay Area Open Taekwondo Championships was held at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California on Saturday, August 2, 2014.  Twelve Team MTA students competed at the event.

Yes indeed, this team definitely knows how to cheer for one another! Master Lee’s team building and training regimen for Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s competition team is paying off.

Students are applying what they learn during Team MTA classes and gaining strength, confidence, and all are getting better with each tournament they attend.

So how did Team MTA do at the Bay Area Open?   From the MTA Facebook page:

What a great day for team MTA at the 2014 Bay Area Open!! 7 golds, 3 silvers, and 3 bronze!!! Everyone did amazing!! Hard work is paying off!

Team MTA and the 2014 USAT National Champtionships — largest taekwondo event in the world

The 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships held at the San Jose, California Convention Center July 1 to 7th is recognized as the largest taekwondo martial arts event in the world.

San Jose Convention Center 2014 Nationals webMore than 5,000 athletes and 700 coaches from throughout the United States took part in the week-long competition, with thousands of family and friends cheering and supporting their athletes.

Many of Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s Team MTA opponents came from neighboring states Arizona and Texas but also as far away as New York, Michigan, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska.

From the Taekwondo Team USA website:

“We are very pleased with the number of participants at the 2014 National Championships,” USA Taekwondo CEO Bruce Harris said.

“The continued large number of participants at our national events is encouraging, and it gives us a great opportunity to not only showcase the sport of taekwondo but also provide an opportunity to get new athletes in the Olympic pipeline so that we can field a team of our very best athletes to represent our country, and USA Taekwondo, in the Olympic Games.

Olympic Team Pin“My sincere and heartfelt thanks go out to all parents, coaches, instructors, athletes and family supporters for helping to make the 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships a success.”

Congratulations to the Team MTA athletes who took part in this year’s USA Taekwondo Nationals!

Team MTA — most of whom are participating at the National level for the first time — did an awesome job, fought hard and never gave up.

For athletes to compete at the National level — after qualifying at state-level competitions — is an honor, and Master Lee, Mrs. Sophia Lee and all the parents and supporters are proud of all the effort and training hours that Team MTA put forth to compete at this year’s National Championships.

You can read about the daily 2014 Nationals competition results on the MTA Facebook page (especially the exciting last day).  Excerpt:

We are so proud of all of our fighters. It was not about a medal or winning, but each and every fighter went out, left everything on the mat, and gave their all and more.   GO TEAM MTA!

We look forward to seeing Team MTA athletes at the next taekwondo competition events, and they will continue to train diligently for the 2015 California state competitions and the Nationals!

Team MTA — powered mostly by siblings — heads to 2014 Taekwondo National Championships this week

At the 2008 Bejing Olympics,  siblings and USA National Team Members Steven, Mark and Diana Lopez represented the United States in Taekwondo.  It marked the first time since 1904 that three siblings have been on the same Olympic team.  The Lopez siblings have all earned medals in past Olympics and Taekwondo World Championship competitions.

2014 NC logo 300x375Making it to the USA Taekwondo National Team and competing in the Olympics is a lofty goal for athletes, but perhaps training with siblings add support during the ups and downs of competitions and strengthens the perseverance needed for the journey.

At Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy, we have our own sibling National Team (and Olympic) hopefuls, too!

Of the 13 members of  Team MTA headed to the USA Taekwondo National Championships this week, 10 are siblings.

Pictured above from left are Jaiden and Josiah Russell and Jose and Jonathan Carreno.  The Russell and the Carreno brothers have all medalled in past state level taekwondo competitions (California and Nevada), as well as many Bay Area Taekwondo competitions.

Jaiden, 11 years old (competing in the 10-11 YOUTH division) and Josiah, 12 years old (competing in the 12-14 CADET Division) both placed first winning gold medals at the 2011 California State Taekwondo Championships.  Jaiden also won the gold medal at the 2014 Nevada State Taekwondo Championships.

Jose, 13 years old (competing in the 12-14 CADET division) and 9-year-old Jonathan (competing in the 10-11 YOUTH division) both placed first winning the gold medal at the 2013 Northern California State Championships. The Carreno brothers recently tested for and earned their black belts.

The rest of the siblings representing Team MTA are:

At the May, 2014 Tiger Claw championships in San Jose, he showed his toughness and skill while fighting a considerably taller (and bigger) opponent, earning respect and cheers from the crowd gathered to watch the match.  Angel also placed 2nd in the event’s Poomsae Competition – the form and more artful aspect of  taekwondo.

Matthew Bartlett

Seven year old Matthew Bartlett competed at the 2014 California State Championships in April, winning a bronze medal for his age and division.  He has also competed in and medalled in Bay Area competitions.  At Nationals, he competes in the 6-7 year old DRAGON Division.

Matthew’s brother, Kenny is also a member of Team MTA and perhaps by next year, we will have more than 10 sibling teams competing at State level and national level championships!

Notes:

  1. MTA Alum Melissa Marzan will also compete this week, as well as student Pearl Chavez, competing this year for Tigers Taekwondo (her Taekwondo home prior to her family’s move to the Monterey Bay Area).
  2. At USA Nationals and State level competitions, competitors fight at division age levels they will be by December 31st (a bit of a disadvantage for those born in the latter part of the year, as is the case with Mr. Terry Tran when he competed in the 18 to 32-year-old division when he was still 17 years old).

The 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships starts today and concludes on July 7, 2014.  The event venue is the San Jose Convention Center.

If you would like to attend the event, please visit the USAT website and click on the calendar section / USAT National Championships (or see Mr. Cabalza or Master Kim at the office and to learn the days that Team MTA members are competing).

Master Lee as well as Mrs. Sophia Lee will be at the convention center for most of the week (and weekend) to coach and support Team MTA competitors!

GO TEAM MTA!!!
