If you bought a car wash ticket, please see your Team MTA member or the office for a refund, or as some have done, consider the ticket a donation towards this year’s fundraising efforts.  Thank you!

This TEAM knows how to CHEER! Team MTA video clip & sound bite at the 2014 Bay Area Open

Master Lee often speaks to Team MTA members about the importance of supporting each other during rigorous competition training classes, and especially cheering on team mates during martial arts tournaments.

If you have ever wondered how a group of Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s students, parents and supporters can sound at competition events, watch and listen to this video from the 2014 Bay Area Open as the team congregated to watch the last match of the day (Team MTA member Angel Cruz in red chest gear coached by Master Kim).  Angel was again competing against a considerably taller opponent.

At the end of the challenging match and after Angel wins to place 1st, students enthusiastically cheer “…MTA, MTA, MTA, MTA!”

The 2014 Bay Area Open Taekwondo Championships was held at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California on Saturday, August 2, 2014.  Twelve Team MTA students competed at the event.

Yes indeed, this team definitely knows how to cheer for one another! Master Lee’s team building and training regimen for Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s competition team is paying off.

Students are applying what they learn during Team MTA classes and gaining strength, confidence, and all are getting better with each tournament they attend.

So how did Team MTA do at the Bay Area Open?   From the MTA Facebook page:

What a great day for team MTA at the 2014 Bay Area Open!! 7 golds, 3 silvers, and 3 bronze!!! Everyone did amazing!! Hard work is paying off!

Team MTA and the 2014 USAT National Champtionships — largest taekwondo event in the world

The 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships held at the San Jose, California Convention Center July 1 to 7th is recognized as the largest taekwondo martial arts event in the world.

San Jose Convention Center 2014 Nationals webMore than 5,000 athletes and 700 coaches from throughout the United States took part in the week-long competition, with thousands of family and friends cheering and supporting their athletes.

Many of Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s Team MTA opponents came from neighboring states Arizona and Texas but also as far away as New York, Michigan, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska.

From the Taekwondo Team USA website:

“We are very pleased with the number of participants at the 2014 National Championships,” USA Taekwondo CEO Bruce Harris said.

“The continued large number of participants at our national events is encouraging, and it gives us a great opportunity to not only showcase the sport of taekwondo but also provide an opportunity to get new athletes in the Olympic pipeline so that we can field a team of our very best athletes to represent our country, and USA Taekwondo, in the Olympic Games.

Olympic Team Pin“My sincere and heartfelt thanks go out to all parents, coaches, instructors, athletes and family supporters for helping to make the 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships a success.”

Congratulations to the Team MTA athletes who took part in this year’s USA Taekwondo Nationals!

Team MTA — most of whom are participating at the National level for the first time — did an awesome job, fought hard and never gave up.

For athletes to compete at the National level — after qualifying at state-level competitions — is an honor, and Master Lee, Mrs. Sophia Lee and all the parents and supporters are proud of all the effort and training hours that Team MTA put forth to compete at this year’s National Championships.

You can read about the daily 2014 Nationals competition results on the MTA Facebook page (especially the exciting last day).  Excerpt:

We are so proud of all of our fighters. It was not about a medal or winning, but each and every fighter went out, left everything on the mat, and gave their all and more.   GO TEAM MTA!

We look forward to seeing Team MTA athletes at the next taekwondo competition events, and they will continue to train diligently for the 2015 California state competitions and the Nationals!

Team MTA — powered mostly by siblings — heads to 2014 Taekwondo National Championships this week

At the 2008 Bejing Olympics,  siblings and USA National Team Members Steven, Mark and Diana Lopez represented the United States in Taekwondo.  It marked the first time since 1904 that three siblings have been on the same Olympic team.  The Lopez siblings have all earned medals in past Olympics and Taekwondo World Championship competitions.

2014 NC logo 300x375Making it to the USA Taekwondo National Team and competing in the Olympics is a lofty goal for athletes, but perhaps training with siblings add support during the ups and downs of competitions and strengthens the perseverance needed for the journey.

At Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy, we have our own sibling National Team (and Olympic) hopefuls, too!

Of the 13 members of  Team MTA headed to the USA Taekwondo National Championships this week, 10 are siblings.

Seven year old Matthew Bartlett competed at the 2014 California State Championships in April, winning a bronze medal for his age and division.  He has also competed in and medalled in Bay Area competitions.  At Nationals, he competes in the 6-7 year old DRAGON Division.

Matthew’s brother, Kenny is also a member of Team MTA and perhaps by next year, we will have more than 10 sibling teams competing at State level and national level championships!

Notes:

  1. MTA Alum Melissa Marzan will also compete this week, as well as student Pearl Chavez, competing this year for Tigers Taekwondo (her Taekwondo home prior to her family’s move to the Monterey Bay Area).
  2. At USA Nationals and State level competitions, competitors fight at division age levels they will be by December 31st (a bit of a disadvantage for those born in the latter part of the year, as is the case with Mr. Terry Tran when he competed in the 18 to 32-year-old division when he was still 17 years old).

The 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships starts today and concludes on July 7, 2014.  The event venue is the San Jose Convention Center.

If you would like to attend the event, please visit the USAT website and click on the calendar section / USAT National Championships (or see Mr. Cabalza or Master Kim at the office and to learn the days that Team MTA members are competing).

Master Lee as well as Mrs. Sophia Lee will be at the convention center for most of the week (and weekend) to coach and support Team MTA competitors!

More about bowing (kyong-ye) from our resources page – Language  of Taekwondo

KYONG-YE – TO BOW – Bowing is a traditional way of showing respect. It doesn’t imply subservience to anyone. We bow to show respect to our school, flag, art, instructors and ourselves. It is imperative that we bow with sincerity. Be sure to bow slowly (take about four seconds), bending at the waist and looking down. By not looking at the person you bow to, you show respect and trust.

Tonight — Tuesday, June 3rd — is the potluck dinner party to bid farewell to Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy students Daniel and Daphne (see earlier post).

We will also welcome new instructor Master Kim, who arrived from Korea yesterday.

Master Kim, 26 years old, began his Taekwondo training at 3 years old.  His father is a 9th degree black belt, and is Master Lee’s Grandmaster.

Master Kim graduated from a Korean college focused on martial arts and taekwondo instruction and served in the Korean military.

Master Lee and his assistant instructors look forward to having Master Kim as part of the MTA team.  The students of  Monterey Bay Taekwondo will benefit from Master Kim’s extensive martial arts knowledge and he will help students achieve their martial arts goals.

The potluck party is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 PM this evening (no Demo Team or SWAT / STORM classes tonight).  Please note there are 3 classes today as follows:

  • 3 to 5-year-old class from 3:30 to 4:20
  • Purple Belt to Black Belt class from 4:30 to 5:20
  • White Belt to Orange Belt class from 5:30 to 6:20

Potluck dinner set up will begin right after White Belt to Orange Belt class.  See you tonight!

Korean FlagDid you know…

Taekwondo originated in Korea over 2,000 years ago and many taekwondo grandmasters are natives of South Korea.

Taekwondo is considered the most popular martial arts based on the number of practitioners world-wide (estimated at over 70 million in 190 countries by the South Korean government), and has been an Olympic event since the year 2000.

Black Belt Graduation Ceremony May 31st

A graduation ceremony for Monterey Bay Taekwondo Academy’s (MTA) newest Black Belts follows the May 2014 promotion test.

The black belt graduation ceremony is scheduled from 2:30 to 3:00 PM this Saturday, May 31st.

All students and families are invited to support and congratulate MTA’s new black belts.  After years of training, these students have finally achieved their martial arts black belt goals.

Videos of the students during the black belt testing process will be presented — so the ceremony is a great opportunity to see what it takes to earn a Kukkiwon - World Taekwondo Headquarters black belt.

Congratulations to junior students who are now moving on to “senior” status as Black Belts!

Special Potluck Dinner Tuesday, June 3rd – Farewell to Daniel and Daphne

A special evening is planned for Tuesday, June 3rd.

We will have a potluck dinner party from 6:30PM to 8:30PM to say farewell to two of our long-time students:

Daniel Perez – 10 years old and MTA black belt, will be leaving  California as his family is moving to Texas.  Daniel has trained here since March, 2010 and is a member of the Demo Team.

Daphne Garcia-Lopez – 10 years old and MTA poom belt will be moving to San Francisco.  She has trained here since December, 2011 and testing for her black belt next month!

Welcome to Master Kim from Korea

Though it is a sad farewell to two of our students, we also have the happy occasion to welcome a new instructor from Korea, Master Kim, during the same evening.

Master Kim, a 5th degree black belt is arriving this weekend and will assist Master Lee in teaching MTA classes.  More details about Master Kim to follow, so check back soon!

Please do plan to attend next Tuesday’s special evening event.  The sign up sheet for the pot luck dinner is posted at the bulletin board near the entrance.

We look forward to seeing everyone!
